Arsenal were awarded a penalty against Slavia Prague in the Champions League, but VAR got involved and UEFA later explained the decision.
UEFA has confirmed the reasons behind the decision to award Arsenal a penalty in the Champions League match against Slavia Prague. Mikel Arteta’s side are aiming for four wins on the bounce in European competition against opponents from the Czech Republic.
Arsenal were in the ascendancy and came close to taking the lead through Gabriel just a minute later, with Bukayo Saka also threatening early on. However, the Gunners had to wait until the 32nd minute to break the deadlock.
Saka’s corner kick was handled by Lukas Provod in the box and a penalty was awarded after VAR intervention. The England international stepped forward to take the spot-kick and fired a shot past Jakub Markovic from 12 yards out.

UEFA said in a statement: “The decision was reversed and a penalty was awarded. Slavia Prague’s No. 17 touched the ball with his left hand, which was in an unnatural position above his shoulders and caused him to grow larger.”
With this penalty, Saka became the first Arsenal player to score in four consecutive Champions League away games. Victory for the Gunners tonight ensures they continue their 100 per cent record in Europe’s elite competition this season and solidifies their place at the top of the Champions League league stage.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke ahead of the game about how difficult the match against Slavia Prague will be. “We know it’s going to be a really tough game here tomorrow (Tuesday night),” he said in his pregame press conference.
“They haven’t lost here at home all season. They’re a team that’s used to playing together.
“They have a very clear philosophy and create a heavy atmosphere as well.
“So we know it’s going to be a really tough game.”
