Manchester United are ready to cut their losses and let Jadon Sancho go for free this summer rather than trigger his extension clause and pay him another year’s wages
Manchester United are prepared to let Jadon Sancho go for free this summer, five years after paying £73m to bring him back to England from Borussia Dortmund.
The winger has returned just 12 goals in that time and is currently on loan at Aston Villa. This will be his third consecutive away loan stint as he has fallen out of favor at Old Trafford. United have the option to extend his contract by 12 months.
It is a common practice and they can keep their assets and charge him a fee. However, the Manchester red half will avoid that opportunity and instead intend to let him leave for free come the summer.
Sancho’s contract sees him on a hefty £200,000-a-week wage, but United are no longer willing to pay that wage and will allow him to leave Old Trafford rather than risk another year’s salary if a buyer cannot be found, talkSPORT reports.
The former England star was linked with a move to Roma in the summer but ended up heading to Villa Park. Sancho’s demise began with him publicly criticizing Erik ten Hag on social media, which led to him being frozen out and then loaned out.

Despite Ruben Amorim currently in charge, no chances have presented themselves and Sancho was part of the so-called ‘bomb squad’ in the summer. Chelsea, who spent him on loan last year, paid a penalty to avoid signing him permanently, so he was waiting for a route out of Manchester.
Sancho has not started a Premier League game for Villa this season, with manager Unai Emery giving the winger just 69 minutes in the top flight through three substitute appearances. He came on as a substitute in the recent win over Manchester City, but was sent off late in the game.
Back in the summer, Amorim insisted he would not sell players like Sancho cheaply and would bring them back into the team if the valuation was not met.
He said: “I know for a fact that Omar (CEO Barrada) and Jason (Wilcox director of football) and the club have numbers (prices) for these players. If they don’t get there, they will be Manchester United players, that’s for sure. I understand that other clubs are probably waiting for the last moment, but they could have a surprise.”
