Jamie Carragher was due to join the Borussia Dortmund fans in the away end against Manchester City, but the club and UEFA blocked the pundit’s wishes over safety concerns.
Jamie Carragher was prevented from joining Borussia Dortmund fans in the away end at the Etihad on Wednesday night due to intervention from both Manchester City and UEFA.
Despite requests from CBS Sports, the broadcaster where he worked, neither side would allow pundits to watch the game from the stands.
City themselves are thought to have felt it could be a safety issue for the former Liverpool player to be rooting for one of the Reds’ rivals in the Dortmund side. The Daily Mail claims UEFA intervened because the press area and stands were not allowed to be replaced due to the pundit’s media accreditation.
Carragher famously spent a boozy night behind Dortmund’s yellow walls during the 2024 Bundesliga semi-final victory over PSG. On Wednesday, the 47-year-old was back in front of German fans before the match in Manchester.
He joined the away followers and marched from the city center to the stadium. Carragher was handed a Dortmund scarf and joined in the fans’ song. He was given a beer and at one point held a yellow smoke bomb in the air.

Another concern is the possibility that Carragher will have to interview City players after the match, who have just spent the night cheering on their opponents. Despite being denied entry, the critic was in good spirits when interviewed by his CBS colleagues.
He said: “It was great. It was a great journey from the center of Manchester to the ground. They are having fun, they are looking forward to the game and I’m a bit worried about Erling Haaland. But they have (Serou) Guirassy up front who I think could cause them a problem or two. They are playing their best and hopefully by the end of the game they will be really enjoying themselves and I might join them.”
Dortmund eventually fell behind against Manchester City, when Haaland scored again against his former club. The Norwegians scored one of the four goals, with Phil Foden playing the leading role. The playmaker showed his best with two spectacular goals.
Waldemar Anton scored a goal for the German team in front of the traveling fans, but his goal did not spark a comeback. Instead, it was City’s Rayan Cherki who had the final word, scoring in stoppage time to cap off a brilliant night for Josep Guardiola’s side.
