Rob Edwards will not be in charge for today’s (Saturday) clash between Middlesbrough and Birmingham City after club officials decided to keep him out of the match due to concerns over his future at the club. Premier League side Wolves are keen to lure Edwards from Boro.
It is currently unclear who will replace Edwards for this match, and the club is expected to release a statement providing further details. The decision regarding Edwards was made following extensive discussions between the head coach and club officials on Friday, following a formal approach from Wolves to speak to him on Thursday.
In addition to not overseeing the game against Birmingham, Edwards did not oversee Friday morning training and his customary pre-game press conference was canceled. Instead, the 42-year-old was in talks with club executives, including owner Steve Gibson, to resolve the situation.
Although Edwards’ future at the club is in doubt, club officials have indicated they remain firm about Wolves’ approach at this time.
As it stands, Wolves are believed to be keen to have discussions with Edwards for the still-vacant position, with reports suggesting he is interested in the role. In addition to having strong links with the Premier League club, both as a player and coach, his family also lives nearby.
But they will be looking to pick up the vital three points at Riverside this Saturday, with Boro keen to get back to winning form after three games without a win. The visitors will be Birmingham City, who have just won their second consecutive game 4-0 at home, but their away record is less impressive with just two wins from seven games.
