Manager Arne Slott has announced that British record holder Alexander Isak is scheduled to return to training with Liverpool on Friday ahead of the Reds’ crucial Premier League game against Manchester City this weekend. The £125m striker has missed Liverpool’s last four games due to a groin problem.
However, following his recent call-up to the Sweden national team, Isak could be included in Liverpool’s squad when they travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, their last game before the international break. However, Liverpool’s head coach urged patience in a press conference.
“Isak will be training with the team again after being out for three weeks. I know I said his pre-season ended a few weeks ago, but even with a three-week rehabilitation period, it won’t bring him back to his previous level.”
“Even if our rehab has done a great job, you can’t recreate the game. Again, I have to say we’re going to give him some time.”
Slott also answered a question about the fitness of left-back Andy Robertson, who has played three games in the space of a week.
Speaking about the Scotland captain, the Dutchman said: “Robbo started against Crystal Palace and started three games in seven days.
“We had to take him off towards the end (against Real Madrid). He felt tired, but we will wait to see how he is today.”
Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Alisson Becker and defenders Jeremy Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni for this weekend’s match.
However, Slott confirmed Alisson will be ready to return for the home game against Nottingham Forest on November 22nd.
The Reds will go into the match against City in high form after a 1-0 home win over Real Madrid in the Champions League and a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Aston Villa. With this, the current champions’ Premier League losing streak ended at four.
