Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was reportedly refused entry to the away side of Manchester City’s match against Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium. Carragher was at Anfield on Tuesday night to watch his former club beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League.
And 24 hours later, Carragher was in Manchester to cover the Champions League Round 4 game between City and Dortmund for CBS Sports. The 47-year-old was spotted walking towards the Etihad with Dortmund fans ahead of Wednesday night’s kick-off.
This is not the first time Carragher has interacted with fans of a Bundesliga club during a Champions League match. The former Liverpool defender celebrated alongside the German club’s supporters at Signal Iduna Park’s famous ‘yellow wall’ during the 2024 semi-final between Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
However, the Daily Mail reported that Carragher attempted to join Dortmund fans away at the Etihad on Wednesday night. However, it is claimed that Carragher was refused entry to the stadium by both UEFA and City, citing a number of reasons.
Both City and UEFA declined to comment, with reports suggesting that UEFA did not believe Carragher’s press credentials were sufficient to qualify for the away team.
City are also said to be cautious about allowing the former Liverpool player to join Dortmund’s support in the away side.
City won the match 4-1 with goals from Phil Foden (two goals), Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki and are set for a tense Premier League clash with title rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
Carragher was then seen on the touchline with CBS sports pundit Peter Schmeichel, speaking about his trip to the Etihad with Dortmund’s away support.
“It was fantastic. It was a great walk from Manchester city center to the ground,” Carragher told CBS Sports before kick-off on Wednesday night. “They are having fun and are looking forward to the game, but they are a little worried about Erling Haaland.
“But they have a player up front in (Serou) Guirassy who we think can cause a problem or two. They are in great form and hopefully by the end of the game they are really enjoying themselves. I might join them too.”
