Tottenham Hotspur have issued a statement expressing support for Italian defender Destiny Udoghi after he was allegedly threatened with a gun. The Metropolitan Police Department has begun investigating the incident, which occurred in September of this year.
Udogi was said to have been walking in downtown London with a friend when the incident occurred. Police were notified at 11:14 pm on September 6th, and a full-scale investigation is currently underway.
The agent was arrested and detained last month on suspicion of brandishing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, The Sun reported.
The arrested agents do not work for Udogi, but are agents for star players, including England players, and are also being investigated for blackmailing and threatening friends of the footballer.
A Tottenham Hotspur spokesperson said: “We have provided support to Destiny and her family since the incident and will continue to do so. As this is a legal matter, we are unable to comment further.”
The deputy has not yet been charged with a crime, but police raided his home in Hertfordshire two days after the incident.
He was later granted bail on September 9 on the condition that he not come into contact with the athlete. The agent was prohibited from visiting the player’s club training ground and was also prohibited from traveling abroad.
However, the bail variation was granted by a Magistrates Court judge after the man requested a passport to leave the UK on a pre-booked trip. Nevertheless, he has reportedly been asked to return it to police upon his return.
A source told The Sun: “This was a frightening incident and one that has shocked the business side of football.
“The players were understandably upset and being threatened with a gun was shocking.
“He reported immediately, which was the right thing to do for his safety. He has the support of his friends and the club and we all hope that his performance is not affected.”
“But significant questions will remain as to why this happened, and police are now trying to answer them.”
