Former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham has dismissed the idea that the Reds could benefit from the tense atmosphere at Spurs’ home following the London club’s recent defeat to Chelsea. After the 1-0 loss to their city rivals, Spurs fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the performance of Thomas Frank and his team.
However, Tottenham bounced back with a comfortable 4-0 win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Despite this, Sheringham said in an interview with Oddspedia that he believes the idea of the Reds taking advantage of a potentially tense atmosphere in north London is wrong.
Instead, he is hoping for a united front when United visit this weekend. “I went to the Spurs game last night and was curious to see how the supporters reacted after the Chelsea game,” Sheringham said.
“They tried again and Tottenham ended up putting in a good performance. It wasn’t great – they probably played better with 10 men in the end than they did with 11 – but I don’t think the United game was the type of game where Spurs fans couldn’t understand what was going on.”
“I don’t think this type of game will be a problem for Thomas Frank because it’s good for everyone to have Manchester United come to town and get everyone excited about their game. I think Tottenham will be up to it, and so will the supporters, so it’s going to be a great game.”
“The other games that Tottenham are expected to win are at home against teams like Brentford and it’s starting to get a bit tricky.” With loyalties divided between both clubs, Sheringham is expecting an entertaining and hard-fought battle.
“I wanted to say there were goals, but Manchester United’s defense has tightened up a bit lately and Tottenham look solid at the back with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero,” he concluded. “We’ll aim for a 1-1 draw.”
Both teams enter the clash with 17 points and a win for either side would move them into second place in the Premier League, but it could be just a matter of hours.
