Senne Lamence signed an £18m deal from Royal Antwerp in the summer, but Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel didn’t seem completely convinced at first.
Manchester United star Senne Lamence has claimed that suggestions Peter Schmeichel should not have signed him “make sense”. The Belgian goalkeeper signed an £18 million deal with Royal Antwerp in the summer as the Red Devils looked to rectify their troubled position.
Rammens has cemented his place as Ruben Amorim’s number one following a string of outstanding performances at Old Trafford. Despite this, United icon Schmeichel had some reservations and suggested the club should have considered more experienced options.
“As for Ramens, to be honest, I had never even heard of him until the link came up. I know his stats are good across the top 10 leagues in Europe, but that was in Antwerp, Belgium, with a team that finished fifth.”
Schmeichel added: “Lamence could be the best signing of all time, but at the moment it feels like an aspirational one and not what United need at the moment.”
“If they had signed him along with Martinez, it would have made perfect sense. A proven World Cup winner is number one and a talented young keeper is developing behind him. But instead, the question remains of who will be number one.”

And while Ramens joked about Schmeichel’s comments, he also insisted he might have a point. During the meeting, he told Belgian media outlet HLN: “Weren’t you the one who said we should buy Donnarumma or Martinez?”
“No, that’s not true. He was understandably hesitant too. When I signed him, he just didn’t know me yet. I don’t think he watched many Antwerp games. I don’t think he watched many Antwerp games.”
“One of the first games, he came to the sideline to have a little chat. He was very friendly. He tried to put me at ease and told me to just do what I have to do and have confidence in my defense.”

Ramens has played in three games for the Red Devils so far, keeping one clean sheet. United fans praised him, chanting “Schmeichel in disguise”. Ramens is pleased with the accolade, but he’s not too far ahead of the curve.
He added: “That’s Britain for you. If things don’t go well they might bury you deep, but if things go well they’ll praise you to the skies.”
“I take that with a grain of salt, because I have to prove myself so many times to be mentioned in the same sentence as Schmeichel. But I thought it was a very nice compliment.
“I want to play here for 10 years and become an important player and leave a legacy like Schmeichel and Van der Sar.”
