David Weir becomes the latest high-profile former Brighton & Hove Albion employee to join Chelsea after completing his move to sister club Strasbourg
Former Brighton & Hove Albion technical director David Weir has been appointed sporting director at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg as Chelsea’s owners swoop in again at the Seagulls. The former defender becomes the latest member of the Blues’ staff to join the Blues from the Amex Stadium, but this time he will move to their sister club.
Weir’s time away from football was short-lived after he left the south coast club after seven years in early September. The 55-year-old held several positions at the club before becoming technical director under manager Tony Bloom.
But he becomes the latest high-profile swap from Brighton to Chelsea. He will begin his role at Strasbourg on November 1, at a club wholly owned by the Blues’ ownership group, BlueCo.

Weir linked up with Bruco from Brighton alongside the likes of Graham Potter, with the former West Ham United manager becoming one of the most high-profile signings to make the move to Stamford Bridge. There has been an exodus from the Seagulls to Chelsea in recent years, with Facundo Buonaotte joining Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, Roberto Sanchez and João Pedro this summer, continuing a well-trodden journey.
Reactions have been mixed, but there has been some anger among clubs over the move. One X user tweeted: “Totally embarrassing. Boley and Bruco remain obsessed with Brighton! Strasbourg fans, what are they doing to your club? What a shame.”
Another added: “This is getting weirder and crazier. We have officially become a feeder club for Chelsea and Chersbourg.”
“Aren’t you embarrassed at all?” asked user X. Mr Weir expressed his excitement to continue his development alongside former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior.
“It’s a great honor to join racing,” he said. “A historic club with a strong identity and ambitions to grow.
“I was confident in this project and in the quality of the people already in place. I want to settle in Strasbourg and be fully involved in racing life.”
“I look forward to working with Liam (Rosenia) and all the team to contribute to Racing’s success this season and in the years to come.”
