Nani claimed it would be “fantastic” to see Roy Keane return to the management team at his former club Celtic. This comes after Brendan Rodgers resigned from his role at the Scottish giants earlier this week.
A statement from the club dated Monday said: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that Football Manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation. The club has accepted this and Brendan will step down with immediate effect. The club would like to thank Brendan for his contribution to Celtic during two very successful spells at the club.”
“Brendan leaves Celtic grateful for his role in the club’s continued success and wishes him continued success in the future. The process of appointing a new permanent manager is underway and the club will update supporters on this matter as soon as possible.”
The Hoops are considering appointing a new permanent first-team manager after Martin O’Neill and Sean Maloney agreed to take charge of Celtic on an interim basis. Following Rodgers’ departure, the likes of Damian Duff, Steven Gerrard and Ange Postecoglou have been linked with the role during his tenure at Celtic Park, but Manchester United legend Nani has also floated Keane’s name.
The 38-year-old, who played for the Red Devils from 2007 to 2015, told Covers: “It’s great to have Roy Keane back in the management team. Everyone loves to see someone like that in a game. He’s a strong character and he’s confident in what he does and what he says.”
“This is what we want in the football world. We want courageous people who try things, prove themselves and show other players how to do it. They have experience so they can teach and help. So, for sure, wherever it is, it would be very nice to see him back.”
After enjoying a glittering playing career with Cobh Rangers, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Celtic, Keane entered the world of football management in 2006 with Sunderland AFC. He secured promotion for the Black Cats to the Premier League in his first season and resigned in 2008.
He then spent two years at Ipswich Town from 2009 to 2011, and spent the following years in assistant roles with the Irish national team, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, as well as pundit and podcasting roles.
It comes as Celtic have suffered a poor season so far and are currently second in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind Hearts, with six wins, two losses and two draws showing their efforts. O’Neill and Maloney will be looking to boost their spirits in their homeland before jetting off to Thursday’s Europa League clash with Midtjylland, as they face formidable Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-final on Sunday.
Celtic’s next league game will be on Sunday 9th November, at home to Kilmarnock.
