Wayne Rooney’s eldest son Kai was having a breakout season in Manchester United’s academy before being injured
Wayne Rooney’s 15-year-old son Kai has given fans an update on his recovery from injury following the disastrous defeat at Manchester United earlier this year. The United icon’s eldest son is keen to follow in his father’s glorious footsteps but has been hit by injuries and lamented that his life “couldn’t have gone any worse”.
It’s clear he inherited his father’s love of football, with the young talent attracting attention for his performances with United’s youth teams this season. He made headlines this summer at the Super Cup NI in Northern Ireland. His father also made his mark as a young player at Everton in this competition.
Kai made rapid progress and was called up to United’s Under-19 team, where he competed against professionals four years his senior.

Prior to that promotion, he scored a stunning goal for the Under-18s with a left-footed volley into the top corner, replicating some of his father’s memorable strikes.
Earlier this year, Kai posted a photo on social media showing his right foot in a boot, and now he’s updating his followers on his progress.
Now, he took to Instagram to share two snaps of himself enjoying a relaxing time in Dubai with his feet out of their protective boots.
The boy captioned the photo, “Recovering,” followed by a smoke-filled emoji.
The exact nature of his injury is still unknown, but photos suggest he may be close to returning to the pitch.
The youngster usually plays in a central attacking role, similar to his father Wayne, but can play on either flank.
Speaking to BBC Sport about his son’s football career, Rooney said: “I just let him play. I think they started the game well. We won 3-0 and he scored a penalty and got an assist.”
“So I think he’s started well. He just plays and that’s all he’s been doing while playing. I think it’s very unfair to expect him to play any kind of play. He’s just playing. He’s a 15-year-old kid enjoying his football.
“Obviously he gets different attention to a lot of his teammates, but I think he handles it really well.”
Rooney also praised United’s coaching staff, saying: “He’s got a great coach at Manchester United so I’m taking a stand-off approach.
“I’ve talked to him and for me it’s all about his mentality and mindset and making sure he continues to enjoy it, that’s the most important thing for me.”
Rooney’s eldest son has been in United’s academy since he was 11 years old, joining the youth squad in 2020.
