Wolves decide to sack Vitor Pereira after clash with fans | Soccer | Sports

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira’s position appears to be secure despite his team’s struggles on the field, despite clashes with fans following the weekend’s defeat to Burnley. Wolves, who are scheduled to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League after nine games. In league games, they have seven losses and two draws, with a goal difference of -12 and are yet to win.

Pereira took over the reins of Wolves in December 2024 following the sacking of manager Gary O’Neill, whose side were languishing in 19th place in the Premier League. He succeeded in guiding the club to safety, with six consecutive wins in March and April playing a key role, as they comfortably cleared the relegation zone by 17 points.

Despite the team’s continued struggles this season, owner Jeff See showed his faith in Pereira by offering him a new contract earlier this season, and the club’s stance remains unchanged and the manager still enjoys support.

Wolves have had a poor start to the season after a difficult summer transfer window that saw last season’s top scorer Matheus Cunha leave for Manchester United, but his replacement Tolu Arokodare is yet to bounce back.

The Nigerian striker scored his first goal for the club in the third round of the Carabao Cup against Everton, but is yet to score in the league.

Wolves launched a spirited fightback against Burnley on Sunday and came close to snatching victory, rallying from 2-0 to 2-2 by half-time.

However, their efforts proved to be in vain when Lyle Foster struck a devastating second-half strike to secure victory for the Clarets.

After the final whistle, angry supporters confronted Pereira on the pitch and goalkeeper Jose Sa in the Molineux car park.

Despite the hostility, the manager acknowledged the fans’ disappointment in his post-match comments.

“It’s normal to be frustrated with last-minute results and it’s normal for supporters to be frustrated,” he said. “In my opinion, the team deserved support because the players gave their all on the pitch to win the match.

“We understand it’s difficult to maintain balance after another loss, but we need them. We can’t fight alone and the players can’t fight alone. We need them and if we come together and work together we can do it.”

He added: “I have a lot of football experience. A few months ago they sang my name. When I came here the club was in a very bad position and we are still in the Premier League because we won it together.”

“We’ve done a great job here to be in the Premier League, but we understand it’s football. If you win two or three games in a row, everything changes. I’m worried about the team. I’m worried about winning games. It’s not about me, it’s about the team, it’s about the club.”
