Manchester United youngster Rhys Bennett has been given compassionate leave following the tragic death of his father. Bennett shared the shocking news of her father’s death on social media. United is providing pastoral support to Bennett and has approved compassionate leave.
Bennett released a heartfelt statement on Instagram alongside a photo of her father, writing, “Dad, I never thought I would have to write this so soon. Over the weekend I learned that my father took his own life. I’m heartbroken and devastated and don’t want to believe it’s real, but the sad reality is that it is. From being driven around everywhere as a child to watching him fulfill his dream of becoming a professional soccer player.”
“I love you in this life and in the next. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Speak up. You don’t realize how much you are truly loved.”
Along with his message, Mr Bennett included contact details for charities providing emergency psychological support. The youngster’s teammates expressed their sympathy in the comments below.
Dan Gore commented: “So sorry, brother, sending love to you and your family.”
Tyler Fredrickson responded, “I’m sorry. I send you my love.”
Gabriele Biancheri added: “My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.”
Bennett, 21, was an FA Youth Cup-winning captain and spent last season on loan at League Two side Fleetwood Town before returning to United.
He played for the first team during last season’s tour of the United States and has featured in two games for the Under-21s this season, against Athletic Club in the Premier League International Cup and against Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy last month.
