Newcastle icon criticizes ‘unfair’ rules to block huge transfers | Soccer | Sports

Former Newcastle United star Lee Bowyer has launched a scathing attack on financial regulations that are holding back the club’s ambitions. Eddie Howe’s side are one of the Premier League sides forced to be more cautious in the transfer market due to the league’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR). The Premier League introduced PSR to limit the losses clubs can endure, imposing a loss cap of £105 million over three years. There has been a greater emphasis on the rules in recent seasons, following the penalty points given to Everton and Nottingham Forest during the 2023/24 season.

The following summer, despite being in the Champions League, Newcastle sold Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minte to Forest and Brighton respectively in order to generate income. The latest transfer window has been equally disappointing for Newcastle, who were dominated by Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, with Bowyer claiming financial constraints are holding the club back from realizing their potential.

“I can’t say a bad word against Newcastle at the moment because as a club their hands are tied,” Bowyer told Ladbrokes at the launch of Ladifaction. “And it frustrates me, obviously I played for the club and the fans were incredible there… and I feel sorry for them because it’s unfair.

“I don’t think that’s fair when you look at clubs who have spent the last 20 years investing money left, right and centre, and any club has been able to build an unbelievable team that can challenge for titles.

“Now Newcastle have the money to do it, but it’s restricted. They’ve finally got someone who has the money to help them compete, but they can’t use it and still be able to actually compete with the top teams in the division. That’s why I think Eddie[Howe]and Jason[Tindall]and the rest of the team are doing a great job with their hands tied behind their backs.”

“They have to hunker down and jump in and work their magic with what they can, but I don’t think that’s fair. Allowing all these teams to spend millions of dollars to build great teams and then change the rules? To me, that’s not right.”

Bowyer famously played during Leeds United’s big-spending era, when the Yorkshire club faced serious financial difficulties after signing big-money signings and qualifying for the Champions League. PSR regulations were introduced to prevent similar scenarios from occurring. However, the former midfielder claimed that Newcastle’s scenario is very different.

“If you have proven owners and you know they have a lot of money, why limit them?” he argued. “I’ve been in situations where owners have come in and said they have millions and millions of pounds to spend, but when they walk in the door they have nothing, and as a result they have put the club in dire straits financially.

“But that’s not the case at Newcastle. We all know the owners have billions in assets, so it’s just limiting clubs who want to be successful.”

Bowyer, who made 98 appearances during his three-year spell at Newcastle, believes the restrictions placed on the club show that regulations need to be reviewed. Newcastle ended their trophy drought last season by winning the Carabao Cup and qualifying for the Champions League. But Bowyer fears the financial restrictions placed on Howe’s side will make it difficult for them to reach the next level and put a cap on their ambitions.

“I think that’s very wrong. You can’t change the rules after other teams, because now Newcastle are facing a situation where it’s almost impossible to catch up with other teams,” Bowyer explained. “And somehow they are still there, doing their best and finishing in the top four.

“I don’t think they have the depth of a team to be in the Champions League and play on Saturday. They’re going to make the odd mistake here and there and we’ve seen it a few times already this season, but it’s because of the depth and it’s not something other top, top clubs in Europe need to worry about.”

“So, yeah, I think overall they’re doing a great job, I really do. And I’m glad they’re there. I wish they could spend a little more money to make it fair, so everyone else can really compete in the same way they’ve been able to in the past.”
