Manchester United missed out on a golden opportunity to make a huge financial profit in the summer transfer window as details of Marseille’s stance on Mason Greenwood have been revealed.
The United academy product was sold to the French club in the summer of 2024 for a fee of £26.6m, with a 50% sell-on clause included in his contract. Greenwood made a huge impression in his debut season with Marseille, scoring 21 goals and providing six assists in Ligue 1, but there were rumors that he could leave the French club.
There were rumors that Saudi Arabian teams were interested, but no movement was made. He remained at Marseille but was provided with an update regarding interest from the club.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that potential suitors were prepared to pay a hefty fee for Greenwood during the summer, but that Marseille had a firm transfer policy. The French club believed the forward was too valuable to part with, a position shared by the club’s board and manager Robert de Zerbi.
They rejected any interest and guaranteed Mr Greenwood would remain in office until at least January. The exact amount on offer has not been disclosed, but it is likely to be significantly higher than what Marseille initially paid him just over a year ago.
There is a sell-on clause in his contract, so United will be monitoring the situation closely. The clause stipulates that if Marseille decide to sign him in the future, United will receive half of the transfer fee.
Marseille missed out on a multi-million pound opportunity by deciding not to sell in the summer. Ruben Amorim was backed by spending around £230m on new players over the summer, so the extra money would have been beneficial.
Greenwood has been in good form for Marseille this season. He has played in 11 games in all competitions, scoring 7 goals and providing 4 assists.
The player started in Marseille’s Champions League match against Sporting CP on Wednesday night, but was substituted just before half-time due to Emerson Palmieri’s red card. Marseille were leading 1-0 at this point, but ended up losing the match 2-1.
