Harry Maguire’s winning header at Liverpool was praised in a social media post, but Sevilla used the post to poke fun at the Manchester United defender
Harry Maguire was due to host Manchester United’s winner against Liverpool on Sunday, but a post praising his achievements on social media was ridiculed by Sevilla.
The centre-half scored the winning goal at Anfield on Sunday, ending his side’s 10-year wait for victory in the red half of Merseyside. It’s not the first time Maguire has had big goals in recent seasons, one of which was on the European stage.
United made a stunning comeback in last season’s Europa League quarter-final against Lyon at Old Trafford, scoring three goals in seven minutes. It was Maguire’s header at the end of extra time that sparked Manchester’s joy.
The Europa League’s Twitter page published a video, noting that Maguire became famous for scoring “clutch headers” in the aftermath of his exploits at Liverpool.
However, the post was somewhat hijacked when it was reposted by Sevilla, which included another video from the European match where Maguire headed towards his own goal as the Spanish team came to the rescue in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford after being two goals down.

That was during Erik ten Hag’s time at the club, and it was a devastating blow. United looked set to cruise to victory in the first leg of the final, but the La Liga outfit scored twice with own goals in the closing stages to equalize heading into the second leg.
The Spanish side returned to their home patch to dispatch United from Europe with a 3-0 win. Sevilla took the lead in the eighth minute when Youssef En-Nesyri scored after a mistake by Maguire.
There was talk that ten Hag were looking to sell Maguire during his time in Manchester, but Maguire remains and continues to emphasize his importance. Ruben Amorim continues to make use of England internationals and made his biggest contribution on Sunday.
Centre-half Maguire’s future in Manchester remains uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract, with no formal offer yet made for the 32-year-old. If the club wants the England international to stay, they will have to come up with new terms.
Given that he is currently in the final eight months of his contract, he could sign a pre-contract with a foreign club from January 1. The Daily Mail reported that regular talks are continuing between the club and the player, but no decision has yet been made from the leadership.
