George Baldock, who tragically drowned in his Athens swimming pool aged 31, left a £4 million fortune to his young son. The former Premier League defender, who previously represented Sheffield United in England’s top flight, was playing for Panathinaikos when he was found dead in October last year.
After not being able to contact her for several hours, her partner raised the alarm. The coroner found no alcohol or drugs in his system and ruled his death an accident.
The hearing heard that Mr Baldock was due to fly back to the UK the day after the tragic accident to celebrate his son Brody’s first birthday. Probate documents reveal the former Sheffield United star left behind a hefty fortune of £5,781,399.
After settling the debt, the net value of his estate was reduced to £4,091,003. Because Mr Baldock died without making a will, the money will automatically go to his next of kin.
According to The Sun, court documents say his estate will be managed by his fiancée, Annabelle Dignam, “for the use and benefit of the minor Brody Baldock” until he turns 18.
Baldock, who was born in Buckinghamshire, was inspired by his grandmother to represent Greece in football 12 times and qualified. He also moved to the countryside to play club soccer there.
Annabelle has paid a heartbreaking tribute following the tragic death of her beloved partner. “George, the love of my life, my soulmate. The perfect father to our beautiful son. You completed me. You were my world, and I know we were yours.”
“You’re here with me Brody with your smile, your giggle, and your infectious personality. My world will never be the same, but I’ll find a way for Brody. I promise. I love you forever and always, G. Your Neen. X.”
Baldock’s devastated family also released a poignant statement: “George, you were the most special father, fiancée, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality endeared so much love to those who were lucky enough to know you and those who adored you from the stands.”
“We will forever cherish our special memories with you and you will live on in our beautiful son. You were scheduled to fly home today so we could celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss.”
“As a family, it has been incredibly moving, but equally difficult, to read the overwhelming number of tributes from those who knew George and those whose lives he touched.”
