Ruben Amorim praised Harry Maguire, Senne Lamence and Amad after Manchester United’s win over Liverpool. Maguire’s decisive late header sealed the Portuguese success on Merseyside as he became United’s first manager to win back-to-back Premier League titles.
Brian Mbeumo scored the opening goal within the first two minutes, giving the visitors an early advantage. Liverpool pressed relentlessly for an equalizer and finally broke through with Codi Gakpo’s goal in the 78th minute. Gakpo rattled the woodwork three times before finally defeating the goalie. The atmosphere at Anfield was tense as the home supporters sensed a potential late winner, but it was United who scored the crucial next goal to secure the away victory.
Maguire scored a powerful header past Giorgi Mamadashvili and was praised by Amorim in the United manager’s post-match media briefing. “That’s really important and our club is under a lot of pressure,” Amorim said of the centre-back’s mental resilience.
“It’s not easy to play here but they all have the opportunity to play for us and then they go away, that’s how life is. Harry Maguire was really important to us and was today as well. He’s a great example and everything he’s been through and a great example for all the kids.”
He was left out of the squad that faced Sunderland before the international break, but Maguire returned to the starting lineup against Liverpool, with Lenny Yolo dropping to the bench as a substitute.
Lamence made a solid debut against the Black Cats and continued his form at Anfield, making some crucial saves. “He was really important, but sometimes you get a little bit of luck. Two shots on the post can change the story, but he showed a lot of character and quality,” Amorim asserted.
And when asked about wing-back Amad, Amorim replied: “Amad is doing very well in that position (right wing-back) and was perfect for that position. He was upset when I came on as a substitute, but he got a yellow card. Otherwise he would have continued to play in the game. He has struggled in the last few weeks, but we are here for him.”
