New Rangers manager Danny Rolle has arrived in Glasgow on a three-year deal, marking the start of a new chapter at Ibrox. The 36-year-old initially pulled out of talks to replace Russell Martin last week, but made his dramatic return after negotiations with Kevin Muscat hit a snag.
Rolle held talks with Rangers owners Andrew Kavena and Parag Malate, which had been considered before Russell Martin’s appointment. The former Sheffield Wednesday manager was the front-runner for the position until Roll himself stepped down from the job after Steven Gerrard withdrew from negotiations.
However, all issues have now been resolved and the former Bayern Munich manager is ready to roll up his sleeves for his Ibrox team’s crucial Europa League clash against Blanc on Thursday night.
Chairman Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell have faced criticism for the protracted search for Martin’s replacement, but now have confidence in Rolle.
Simon Jordan was critical of Rangers’ impending appointment, saying: “My immediate reaction is there’s going to be some ambivalence from Rangers fans. You look at the fact that they recently brought in Michael Beale as Championship manager and it didn’t work out.”
“It looks like an uninspired decision for the fans because they don’t know who Danny Rolle is and haven’t seen much of him. I’m guessing they (Rangers) have done proper research this time around about what they’re getting and what they think they’ll achieve.”
“But all I can say is that the players I know who have played for him thought very highly of him and treated him well. He didn’t have much to work with at Sheffield Wednesday, in the context of a difficult football club with a difficult owner, at a difficult time.”
