Graham Potter has not found success in his roles at West Ham United and Chelsea, but the manager plans to try something new in his next role as he looks to qualify for the World Cup.
Graham Potter will immediately return to management and become head coach of the Swedish national team. The 50-year-old will now make his first foray into international football after being released by West Ham less than a month ago.
The former Chelsea manager will be thrust into the spotlight in the short term as Sweden struggle to qualify for the World Cup. After the defeat against Kosovo, manager John Dahl Tomasson was sacked and Sweden were excluded from automatic qualification from Group B.
Coach Potter’s job will be to reinvigorate the likes of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gökeres as they look to push Kosovo into second place. Winless Sweden have only one point from their first four games and need wins over Switzerland and Slovenia to have a chance.
However, after finishing first in their Nations League group in the 2024/25 season, there is a possibility that they can advance to the playoffs even if they do not finish in second place. Still, Sweden’s leaders will be counting on Potter to energize the team.
The former Brighton coach hasn’t had much success during his time in the Premier League this season. Potter recorded five defeats in six games, leaving West Ham in the relegation zone, and won just six of 23 games during his entire spell with the Irons.

Mr Potter previously lived in Sweden and developed an excellent coaching reputation while working in the country. The former full-back took Ostersund from the fourth tier of Swedish football to the top flight, where they also defeated Arsenal in the Europa League.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, Potter admitted he is interested in a potential new international role. “I’m actually in Sweden right now, at my home in Sweden,” he said.
“I’m in between jobs and have just quit the Premier League. I’m really open to anything that I think I can help with. Being the head coach of the Swedish national team is great.”
“I have feelings for Sweden. I love this country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to appreciate about Swedish football. So, of course, it would be a great opportunity for me.”
Speaking about his next role, Potter added: “I’ve gained a lot of experience and I’m very grateful for the career I’ve had so far.”
“But I’m only 50 and I still have a lot to offer. It’s not about finding a job at a certain level, it’s about finding something where I feel I can be useful and make a difference. I also want to feel that we (the parties) are on the same line. Those are my criteria.”
