Manchester United will be looking for their first win at Anfield since January 2016 when they take on an under-confident Liverpool side this Sunday. The Premier League champions look vulnerable after three consecutive defeats as Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils look to pull off an upset and aim for their first back-to-back league wins under the Portuguese manager.
United have won their last two trips to Anfield with draws since losing 7-0 in March 2023 and know what it takes to frustrate Liverpool. And the Amorim. Seeking a statement result will be confident of punishing the organizers of this weekend with a counterattack. Express Sport reporters decide how United’s manager should line up on Merseyside…

United made just one change from their 2-0 win over Sunderland last time out, with Patrick Dorg retaining his place at left-back. I’m a huge supporter of Koby Mainu and think it’s only a matter of time before Ruben Amorim is forced to use the England midfielder. Mainu’s stamina and ball-playing ability will be appealing against Liverpool, but Casemiro’s experience will give him the nod for now.

Manchester United’s best chance of winning this match is probably on the counter-attack. Benjamin Sesco could help win the duel against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate and give his teammates the opportunity to support him. The lineup with Brian Mbeumo will be key. Mason Mount beats Matheus Cunha to earn the right to start again, with Amad and Patrick Dorg providing vital pace out wide. Nousser Mazraoui returns to the team in place of Luke Shaw.

Lamence is simply a must-choice goal. He has only played one game so his scores will be low, but he is simply better than Vaindir. At centre-back, you’ll want to choose Maguire over Shaw and partner De Ligt and Yoro. And in games that are likely to be a bit of a battle of attrition, I will use Dorg and Mazraoui as wing-backs. In such a close game, Casemiro will start alongside Mainu in midfield, with Fernandes and Mbeumo starting in the number 10 role. Fernandes is too offensively minded to start in a deeper role. And up front is Sesco, with Mount and Cunha making an impact off the bench.

Amorim is reportedly considering bringing Ugarte back, but he will have to resist the temptation or risk another embarrassment if the Uruguayan’s recent form continues. On the left flank, Dorg and Cunha return to provide a much-needed threat to a side that could be targeted by Liverpool and Frimpong. Despite the former Chelsea player’s impressive performances this season, Sesco is rated higher than Mount. United’s only chance of getting a result at Anfield may be on the counter, but we are beginning to see why the £74m man is rated so highly.
