Former Nottingham Forest defender Michael Dawson has given his thoughts on the sacking of manager Ange Postecoglou. The club is currently searching for a third manager following the Australian international’s departure. The former Tottenham head coach was shown the door after Saturday’s emphatic 3-0 win over Chelsea.
Postecoglou was unable to win any of his eight games as manager, losing six and drawing just two. The Australian’s appointment at the start of the season raised eyebrows when manager Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked after just three games.
But just 39 days later, Evangelos Marinakis has wielded the ax again, with Sean Dyche emerging as the bookmakers’ early favorites alongside Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who recently rejected the chance to return to Scottish Premiership side Rangers.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Dawson was quick to react to Postecoglou’s sacking and speculation linking Dyche with Forest’s high-profile player.
“I heard that week. I can understand why they would choose to link up with Sean Dyche, his staff, Ian Warne and Steve Stone,” he said.
“They (Forest) are looking over their shoulders now.
“Fourth down, five points from eight games, he (Marinakis) will be worried.
“Are we surprised this happened now? Probably not, considering he conceded 18 goals in eight games.
“On Monday, I sat on Sky Sports News and said, ‘Give me time, how long is this going to go on?’
“Marinakis himself caused this problem. When Ange was given the managerial job, people and Nottingham Forest fans were thinking, ‘Why him?’
“Nuno’s play and Ange’s play last year were very contrasting.
“Yes, he brought great trophies to Tottenham. But from what we saw at Celtic, from what we saw at Spurs, Ange was never going to change. Do I feel sorry for him? I certainly do.”
Dyche has not held a managerial position since being sacked by Everton in January.
The 54-year-old is a former Forest youth product, hails from his hometown near the City Ground, and has often been spotted watching Forest matches during his time in charge at Goodison Park.
“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect following a series of disappointing results and performances,” the club said in a statement.
“The club will have no further comment at this time.”
