Before taking on the role of manager of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, who resigned as manager of Sporting, tearfully expressed his feelings for his players.
A video has been released of Ruben Amorim bidding a tearful farewell to the Sporting CP players. It’s been almost a year since the Portuguese coach replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.
After confirming his appointment, Amorim coached Sporting in three further games, including a 5-1 victory over Estela in the Primeira Liga, a 4-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League and a stunning comeback victory in Braga. Sporting trailed 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining and won 4-2.
It was a fitting way for Amorim to announce his retirement from a successful reign that saw him win two Primeira Liga titles. His emotional final words to his players have now been broadcast as part of a club documentary chronicling the 2024/25 season.
“I don’t like walk-offs. We’re going to win the championship. There’s no turning back. The difference is huge. We’re going to win,” he told his team.
“What we did in the second half was amazing! But will it be difficult from now on? It will be difficult for everyone. We have to help Quaresma, we have to help Pote, Genie, Ivan who is not playing, Esgaio. It will be difficult. What you did in the second half is amazing!”

“We’re going to win this game… You guys are unbelievable. Much better than Tuesday (against City). What I felt here in the second half… the third goal, the fourth goal, guys, it was the best moment in football.”
At that point, Amorim erupted, but his speech was interrupted by applause from the group. He continued: “Everything you need from me, you will get.
“I’m rooting for you more than myself. Thank you for everything. You’re the greatest ever. Thank you for everything. There’s no better goodbye, okay, boys?”
It’s fair to say that Amorim hasn’t formed the same bond with the United squad and is still struggling to find his form. After finishing mid-bottom in the table last season, losing in the Europa League final and after a summer of big spending in the transfer market, expectations were high.
However, Amorim’s future is in doubt after a difficult start for the Red Devils. He received a vote of confidence from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who won 2-0 against Sunderland before the international break, leaving them just six points behind leaders Arsenal.
Amorim will be aiming for his first consecutive league wins as a manager when he takes charge of United on Sunday for a short trip to Liverpool.
