Salford City’s League Two game against Oldham Athletic was interrupted after two people ran onto the pitch from the stands to protest Gary Neville following his recent social media posts.
Two people wearing hoodies with the words ‘Gary Neville is a traitor’ on them invaded the Peninsula Stadium pitch during Salford City’s League Two game against Oldham Athletic on Saturday afternoon.
The pair, who are not understood to be fans of either Salford or Oldham, brandished England flags before being dragged off the field by security who intervened after the match was paused. The incident comes just weeks after Salford partner Mr Neville was criticized by some online for comments about “angry middle-aged white men”.
In a video posted on social media earlier this month, the Manchester United legend and co-owner of Salford said: “I love my country, I love Manchester, I love England. But I’ve been building in this town for 15 to 20 years and no one has ever put up a Union Jack flag, so why would we put one up now? Frankly, it sends a message to everyone that there’s something they don’t like.”
He added, “On the car ride home, I kept thinking, are we all against each other? And the division that’s being created is really disgusting. It’s mainly being created by angry middle-aged white men. They know exactly what they’re doing.”
Two people made their feelings known during today’s game against Oldham. During the incident, players from both groups wore confused expressions. The far-right group Britain First said in a statement on social media that it supported the protests, confirming it had “united with local Salford patriots to protest the betrayal of Gary Neville”.
Salford won 1-0 with a goal from Daniel Udoh in the 14th minute. The win saw Carl Robinson’s Amies qualify for the League Two play-offs ahead of a 3pm kick-off this afternoon.
