Wayne Rooney has hit back at Marcus Rashford after he claimed the “unstable atmosphere” at Manchester United affected his performance for the Red Devils. The attacker made just six appearances under Ruben Amorim last season before being loaned to Aston Villa during the January transfer window.
This summer, he briefly left Old Trafford again, this time joining Spanish giants Barcelona. He has been thriving for Catalonia this season, making 10 appearances for the Catalan giants and scoring three goals and providing five assists. Rashford found his way back into the England squad and made some controversial comments about United during the international break.
“Certainly consistency is a big part of it. I feel like I’ve been in an inconsistent environment for a very long time, so it’s even harder to be consistent,” Rashford told ITV.
“But I completely agree. I think consistency is what you need to bring to your game, and that’s what I strive for. I want to be at my best as often as possible, not just once in a while.”
“When people talk about consistency, in order to be consistent in anything, not just sports, you need consistent variables in your life and the way you train. There have been so many changes in my career so far.
“But I have to move forward. That’s definitely one thing I want to fix and improve to be at my best more often. When I’m at my best, I really enjoy everything about the sport.”
Rooney gave his thoughts on Rashford’s comments, with the former United captain choosing to focus on the player rather than the “environment”.
“I don’t think the environment was right, but that’s my own fault,” he said on The Wayne Rooney Show.
“I think if you don’t play well or get cut from the team, rightly or wrongly, it’s easier to blame the environment. I think it comes from the way you approach yourself.”
“We know from the games we’ve seen him play that he can do more, he can run more, but that has nothing to do with the environment.
“I might be wrong here. I really like Marcus as a boy and as a person, but I think it’s easy to throw that at people.”
