Manager Thomas Tuchel intends to do things differently at next year’s World Cup after guiding England to qualification with a game remaining after defeating Latvia 5-0 on Tuesday.

Thomas Tuchel remembers watching the 2006 World Cup with a smile on his face. The tournament was held in his native Germany at a time when Tuchel was earning his coaching badge and studying teams, tactics and the game.
Following England’s golden generation and the showbiz soap operas in Baden-Baden probably helped shape his management philosophy and why he wanted to do things differently next summer. The England national team manager recalls: “Maybe I was concentrating more on football, but I realized there was a bit of a circus going on.”
Tuchel was all about the team and building the club atmosphere within the England dressing room that his former manager had always promised, but he has since struggled to create that. That’s why this feels different for England. Tuchel is trying a different approach and is willing to sacrifice big names for team spirit.

This isn’t necessarily about Jude Bellingham or Phil Foden.
It’s about building the unity and cohesiveness needed to win the World Cup. The best teams have it. Spain achieved that at last year’s Euros. Argentina displayed a siege mentality in 2022.
Over the years, England have always picked big names, whether they’re doing well or not. David Beckham and others were guaranteed a place in the set-up, meaning the rest of the team knew they wouldn’t be able to get into the eleven no matter what they did. That meant standards were lower, training wasn’t competitive, and there was no incentive for team members to push themselves.

England have come close many times before. Under Gareth Southgate, they played two finals, a semi-final and a quarter-final. They have players who can seriously compete in major tournaments. But they were missing something special.
Now they have a manager who won the Champions League. He has managed big players at big clubs. He brings confidence and belief that players can improve. They were the first European team to qualify for the World Cup. They completed the remaining two games without conceding a goal. All successful teams are built on a solid defense.
Given the humid and stifling weather conditions in the United States, England will likely have to rely on moments in their matches. Long throws, free kicks, corners. Add to mixer.
Tuchel won’t be afraid of that either. England are building something and if they can get the timing right they have the perfect foundation for success.
