Spanish football icon Gaizka Mendieta has hinted that Barcelona could sign Liverpool striker Alexander Isak in the near future. The former midfielder is aware of Robert Lewandowski’s situation in Catalonia and believes his former club may be interested in Isak.
Lewandowski, who scored 105 goals in 156 appearances for Barça, is approaching the final stage of his legendary career, celebrating his 37th birthday in August. His contract expires next summer, but the Blaugrana have the option to extend the deal for a further 12 months. Isak, 26, is still in his prime and was linked with a record-breaking £125m move to Anfield in the summer.
However, according to Mendieta, despite these developments, the Sweden international may be destined for pastures new if Barça come calling him.
“There was talk in Spain of Alexander Isak going to Barcelona before joining the financially stronger Liverpool,” he told OLBG.
“Of course there will be links between the best strikers and Real Madrid and Barcelona. At the moment Barca still have Robert Lewandowski, but next year they will be looking for his replacement and Isak will also be considered.”
“He’s a great striker. He’s already been in La Liga and knows the competition. His performances last season for Newcastle were great.
“So far, he seems to have settled in quickly at Liverpool. The great striker has no shortage of offers and opportunities with big clubs, both in the Premier League and of course in Spain.”
Isak has scored just one goal in six appearances for the Reds since completing his move from Newcastle on deadline day.
His arrival has not had the impact Arne Slott had hoped for so far, with Liverpool losing three games in a row after a perfect start.
Indeed, fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike has arguably proved to be the Reds’ more successful attacking newcomer this season.
The French forward started his Merseyside career by scoring in his first two Premier League games.
As for Mendieta’s claims regarding Barcelona’s interest in Isak, it is difficult to imagine how such a transfer could materialize.
The Catalan club’s financial woes have dominated the headlines in recent seasons, with the club repeatedly struggling to meet La Liga’s salary limits.
