Alexander Isaac has not made a big impression at Anfield since joining Liverpool from Newcastle United for a British record £125 million, but Alan Shearer wasted no time in calling him out.
Alan Shearer claims Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool “didn’t help”. The 26-year-old was involved in one of the most controversial transfers this summer.
The relationship between Isak and Newcastle United looked rosy from the outside at the end of last season, but his future at the club has become the subject of speculation after the Reds registered an interest. And while the Magpies were initially reluctant to part with their talisman, their outlook changed sharply after a summer of uncertainty on Tyneside.
Isak skipped Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia, choosing instead to train at his former club Real Sociedad, before announcing he wanted to consider options elsewhere.

Upon returning to the North East, Isak was forced to train in isolation away from Eddie Howe’s first team, but the Swede released a damning statement online claiming the club had broken promises made behind closed doors.
He also explained that the best course of action as a result is for all parties to move on. Claims then followed that Mr. Isak reportedly refused to join the Thun Army again, regardless of whether his departure was decided before the deadline.
And ‘Will he?’ Negotiations approached the deadline, with Liverpool ultimately managing to secure their target for a British record transfer fee of £125m, hours before the transfer window closed on September 1st.
Having scored 62 goals and provided 11 assists in 109 appearances for Newcastle, expectations were certainly high for the forward to hit the ground running at Anfield, especially considering how much effort the Reds had put into securing his services.
However, Isak has not made much of an impact since joining, with his only goal for the club coming in a narrow 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup last month. And Newcastle legend Shearer wasted little time criticizing the striker as a result.
Commenting on Isak’s dismal start to the season, Shearer said in an interview with Betfair: “It hasn’t been the start to the season that Isak had hoped for. If you take into account Sweden’s front three of Gökeres, Isak and Elanga, they haven’t been able to score and are on the brink of missing out on qualifying for the World Cup.”
“Obviously, it’s not surprising that the manager paid the price and lost his job. Obviously in the situation at Newcastle, Isak is not playing, he is not training, he is not in full force with Liverpool, of course. He probably was aiming for full fitness in this international break, but it has gone the other way.”
“It didn’t work out. Neither he nor they are scoring and they can’t score. Given the caliber of the front three, being bottom of the group doesn’t seem right at all. The summer certainly didn’t help Isaac.”
Isak has appeared in three Premier League games for Liverpool so far this season, but has failed to find the back of the net in any of them. On the other hand, the Swedish national team has also failed to make an impression on the international front.
The burly player missed most of his country’s World Cup qualifiers last month after failing to play a single game at club level due to a long-term transfer – playing just 20 minutes in Sweden’s 2-0 defeat to Kosovo. In the most recent qualifying round, he started both of the Scandinavian national team’s games against Switzerland and Kosovo, but failed to make a big impact.
Sweden lost 2-0 to Switzerland last Friday and lost 1-0 to Kosovo on Monday. As a result, they sit at the bottom of Group B, and their chances of making it to next summer’s North American tournament look slim to none. They also recently parted ways with head coach John Dahl Thomasson.
