Jordan Pickford still receives a text message from his mother every time he is called up for England. It shows just how much being in England still means to him eight years after his senior debut, as he prepares to receive his 80th cap against Latvia.
Pickford, 31, deserves to go down as one of England’s best No. 1s and has gone from being a hot-blooded keeper to being such a calm and steady presence on the pitch. Incredibly, Pickford is yet to keep a clean sheet in England’s qualifiers and a win against Latvia on Tuesday night will see him qualify for the World Cup.
Everton keeper Pickford said: “That’s the best thing. Every time you get called up for England you should be proud. My mum always texts me after the announcement comes out saying ‘well done’ and ‘congratulations’. I absolutely love coming to England. But every time I step on the training pitch, I want to improve even more…Every time I put on the England shirt and get the nod, it’s always a proud moment for me and I’m going to give my all for England, just as I feel.” He played hard for England over eight games for many years. ”

Pickford is one of England’s biggest characters, his loudest voice and, oddly enough, despite being the most capped player, he ranks third on the list of players who have never played a game as captain. Kenny Samsom has 86 wins, Gary Neville 85 and Pickford 79. He claims that it has nothing to do with him, and his reasoning gives an insight into Pickford’s character and character.
“I think it’s always an honor to leave and become England captain,” he said. “It’s a great achievement, but Harry Kane is our captain and he’s one of the best captains I’ve ever had.
“He sets an example and I feel like I’m a leader even when I don’t have the armband on. You need some leaders in a group, but when you step on the football pitch you feel like you’re one of them. That record doesn’t matter to me.”
“Representing my country is the biggest challenge for me. It’s always been my aim to do what’s best for England.”
Pickford admits he has grown over the years. Former England winger Theo Walcott claimed Pickford had “calmed down and matured”.
Pickford is now very stable and he credits his coaches, current England manager Hilario, Martin Margetson and Mark Prudhoe from his time at Sunderland, with helping him develop.
“When I first started at Sunderland, they specifically said to Prude: ‘Don’t get bored, don’t try to invent jobs, let the jobs come to you.’” That’s a big part of the game. May the work come your way. That’s definitely something I’ve learned and there’s been a lot of progress on that front.
“It’s easier when you’re younger because you’re dumber and you want to be involved in everything. But the more you play with the badge in the Premier League and England, it’s something you learn and you have to be in the moment when you’re called upon and I think I’m very good at that.”
A few years ago, Mr. Pickford told a press conference one of the greatest quips of all time. When someone asked him if he was in danger, he would sometimes “overthink things.”
He instantly answered: “Not likely, dude.” He’s been thinking more deeply lately.
And after appearing in two World Cups and reaching the final at the last Euros, they are even more determined to win and believe Thomas Tuchel is building a team environment that can deliver the biggest trophy in history.
He added, “We reached the final in the last tournament. Spain were better on this day, but it takes a lot of effort to reach the final from away. So we need to be proud of that moment, but now it’s important to take the next step.”
“We know what it takes, but I think that’s something the manager will continue to impose on us as players and as ‘Team England’.
“I think he likes the fact that we are ‘Team England’. The players, the staff, the togetherness is vital going into the tournament. “The first target is tomorrow against Latvia to get us over the line and into the World Cup.”
