Alexander Isak left in shame but Liverpool will be secretly relieved | Soccer | Sports

Sweden’s dream of playing in next year’s World Cup has been pushed to the brink after a crushing home defeat to Kosovo left Alexander Isak’s side on the brink of elimination. After losing to Switzerland last time out, they desperately needed a win to maintain their hopes of finishing in the top two. Kosovo had already defeated Sweden at last month’s international break and had the chance to extend their lead to six points with another win, which they did well.

The result leaves Sweden in a precarious situation with just one point and needing two wins to maintain their slim hopes of qualifying for the tournament in the United States. Also, they have asked Slovenia to drop points in November, but they did not do so against Kosovo, so it is highly unlikely that they will increase their points. Fisnik Aslani scored the decisive goal, and Kosovo successfully fended off a barrage of attacks and corner kicks in the second half. Isak and Arsenal striker Viktor Gökeres accounted for more than half of Sweden’s 13 total shots on Monday night.

The Arsenal star saved one shot from close range and narrowly missed the other. Isak, on the other hand, had six shots on goal, two of which went on target.

Isak’s best chance came with just under 15 minutes remaining, but he squandered a good chance when he fired wide from around 10 yards after receiving a great cross from Gustav Lagerbjelke.

Despite Isak’s embarrassment, Liverpool may be quietly relieved that Sweden are unlikely to qualify for the World Cup.

After a summer marred by his transfer turmoil, it’s no surprise that some fans are happy that he might be able to take an extended break.

@total_slotball commented: “I’m really happy that Sweden didn’t qualify for the World Cup. Isak’s full rest and pre-season next summer should make up for Newcastle’s poor treatment this summer.”

However, not all fans share this sentiment. @Opresii expressed, “ISAK doesn’t need a World Cup (crying animal GIF).”

After Sweden’s loss, Gökeres faced the brunt of criticism on social media, with @Emzyl_ writing: “Gökeres are terrible and offer literally nothing. It’s like playing with 10 people.”

@Kvvazii added: “Watching Gokeres right now makes me count the days until Havertz’s return.”

Both Gokeres and Isak had a shaky start to their seasons in their new hometowns. The former will be hoping to end an eight-game goal drought this Saturday against Fulham.

As for Isak, he will aim to lead Liverpool to their first win in three games against Manchester United the next day.
