Steven Gerrard has broken his silence on social media following his decision to quit Rangers, congratulating former Ibrox colleague Ross Wilson on his move to Newcastle. The Liverpool legend was chosen by Andrew Kavenagh and his team to replace Russell Martin, but after two days of talks in London, Gerrard concluded the timing was not right for him to return to the club.
The hunt is back to square one, with directors such as Danny Rohr, Slaven Bilic and Rafael Wicki believed to be under serious consideration. Meanwhile, Gerard leaves management and returns to his parents’ home in Bahrain.
For much of his first tenure at Ibrox, he worked alongside former sporting director Wilson before going on to enjoy great success in a similar position at Nottingham Forest.
His achievements have recently led to him taking up the role of sporting director at Newcastle on Saturday.
Gerrard posted on his Instagram story, “Congratulations @ross_wilson7. Great club for you, good luck.” Gerrard sent his warmest wishes to him.
This represents a significant career advancement for Wilson. Although Wilson did not win over all the supporters during his time at Ibrox, he still managed to rebuild his reputation in England and originally left Southampton for Rangers in 2019.
After his debut at Newcastle, he declared: “I’m really happy to be here at Newcastle United.
“This is a very special club and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our amazing supporters and the ambition and desire of our owners to continue to develop and build an even stronger Newcastle United.
“Our conversations with the owners have been very positive and we are in regular contact with Eddie Howe and David Hopkinson.
“I feel the trust, unity and collaboration we are building is already strong and I believe that coming together as a team will be crucial as we continue to move the club forward together.
“I am excited to work with everyone from different areas of the football department.
“There is already great work going on here, from the first team to the women’s team to the academy, and my aim is to build on that, strengthen the organization over time and work with the staff to create an environment where players and staff can continue to develop.”
