The German was expected to add further star quality to Arne Slott’s title-winning squad during a remarkable transfer window for the Reds.
However, the 22-year-old has yet to make the impact many expected. Despite appearing in seven Premier League games and two in the UEFA Champions League, Wirtz has yet to register a goal or assist.
It’s not the start the Reds were hoping for from their big-money signing, but will we see Wirtz come into his own soon after returning to Liverpool?
His superb free-kick in Germany’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Northern Ireland in September has been his only goal contribution this season, but manager Julian Nagelsmann is firmly convinced that he will soon be back to his best form to the delight of Liverpool fans.
“I think that’s how it usually goes when you go to a new club or a new league. It’s not that easy at first,” Nagelsmann said.
“He will adapt quickly, score goals and create many chances for Liverpool.”

Nagelsmann is well aware of Nagelsmann, who took over as Germany national team coach in September 2023, but has he noticed a drop in his confidence?
“I think the first time we met after the summer period was special for him because he had just joined Liverpool and it was his first time with the national team[after the transfer],” Nagelsmann added.
“We had a long meeting and discussed the situation and now he is like the old Wirtz, he is in good spirits and we hope to see a great performance from him tomorrow night.”
After three games, Germany are tied with Northern Ireland at the top of their World Cup qualifying group with six points. They next face fellow top players at Windsor Park on Monday night.
Wirtz will return to domestic duty as Liverpool look to end a third consecutive defeat in all competitions.
It is the first time that Slott’s tenure has come under any scrutiny since seamlessly taking over from manager Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield dugout.
The Reds host rivals Manchester United on October 19, before returning to play Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League before facing Brentford in the Premier League. It was all completed in 6 days.
Real Madrid and Manchester City are also lurking nearby. It’s a tough run that certainly poses some challenges.
However, if Wirtz, who is in top form, can make the same impact as he did at Leverkusen, it will certainly take some of the pressure off.
