Manchester United’s leaders have reportedly held talks with senior players to discuss the current situation at the club, but Ruben Amorim’s future remains up in the air.
International break has done little to quell speculation surrounding Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United. This follows reports that the club’s leaders are holding discussions with key players to assess the current atmosphere within the squad.
Amorim, 40, is close to his first anniversary at Old Trafford, replacing Erik ten Hag in November 2024. But progress has been slower than many expected after leading the team to a record-low 15th place in the Premier League last season.
United suffered a further slump this season, losing to League Two side Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup. Amorim’s side are yet to secure their first away win of the season, and club leaders have asked some of their players for their opinion on the progress of the situation.
The situation mirrors a marathon seven-hour meeting between Ten Hag and his former boss this time last year. And it wasn’t long before the tactician was relieved of his role.
Co-owner Joel Glazer, chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox all met at Ratcliffe’s Knightsbridge office in London to discuss the current state of the club. Board member Jean-Claude Blanc, chief operating officer Colette Roche and chief financial officer Roger Bell are also said to have attended the summit.

Ten Hag survived only three weeks from that long meeting. And as problems continue to mount on the pitch, it may not be long before United’s top brass are forced to reconvene.
Berrada and Wilcox are believed to be leading recent discussions between the club’s hierarchy and the players’ union. Captain Bruno Fernandes was among those consulted, but other opinions are also being sought.
It has been suggested that the conversation was casual in nature and was not necessarily intended to assess Amorim’s status at the club. Nevertheless, this is not the kind of activity you would normally witness at a club where everything functions seamlessly.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has repeatedly been forced to answer questions about the manager’s future. The Ineos billionaire defended his head coach, indicating he expects the Portuguese to remain at the club for the foreseeable future.
“He hasn’t had the best season,” Ratcliffe said on the debut episode of his business podcast, after describing Amorim as a decent guy. “Ruben has three years to prove that he is a great coach. (On the question of Amorim being sacked) I would do that.”
The comments came amid growing anger from supporters over the way the club is being run. The Glazer family’s management of United remains a source of great frustration among fans, and Ratcliffe has found it difficult to change sentiment since taking a nearly 30% stake in the club and taking over day-to-day management last year.
Oliver Glassner, Eddie Howe, Gareth Southgate and Diego Simeone are among the managers whose names have been linked with United’s position recently. However, the current boss appears to be staying put for now.
Despite managing 50 Premier League games, United manager Amorim is yet to achieve back-to-back wins in the competition. The Red Devils have enjoyed back-to-back wins at home, beating Sunderland 2-0 just before the international break, but their away performance remains a major cause for concern.
United, currently 10th in the league and just two points off the top six, face a daunting challenge. Over the next month, they will face the likes of Liverpool, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.
