They continued where they left off. And it’s hard to argue with Thomas Tuchel now. Let me tell you, if England continue to play like this, Tuchel will convince us that they will be the underdogs at next summer’s World Cup.
England were superb in their 5-0 win over Serbia last month, tearing Wales to shreds in a dazzling and entertaining display at Wembley. Tuchel caused a huge controversy when he left England’s biggest star and returning player, Jude Bellingham, out of the squad because he wanted to keep the players who played in Belgrade.
The England manager has insisted the emphasis must be on team spirit and unity, rather than “collecting” star players, and this performance fully vindicated that decision. Morgan Rodgers may not have Bellingham’s stardust qualities, but he was back in action after his man-of-the-match performance against Serbia. Rodgers, who is ironically close friends with Bellingham, seems hungry and ready.
With Harry Kane absent due to injury, Ollie Watkins took a chance and the Aston Villa striker scored, showing that England can win even without their captain and top scorer. Then there was Bukayo Saka’s incredible goal, the best of England’s sensational performance. This kind of display was not often seen at Wembley, and fans now support Tuchel wholeheartedly.
There was also a change of captain, with Declan Rice wearing the armband in Kane’s absence, and England looked cohesive and united. Jordan Pickford’s eight consecutive clean sheets is a new record. It was Team England. Let’s be clear: England must find a place for Bellingham in their squad next summer.

But suddenly there’s serious competition, and if the players aren’t into it, they don’t have a chance. Wales was quite poor, barely on par with England. Their passion and manager Craig Bellamy promised to come to Wembley for the fight. At least their fans didn’t stop singing.
But England’s smooth passing, fluency and dangerous forward play also made them look average. The game started in the third minute and England suddenly looked like Arsenal, with Rice swinging in the corner and the big players lining up, while Wales looked nervous with every high ball.
In the third minute Rice swung a corner kick, John Stones headed it in, Marc Guehi took the ball from the edge of the line and Rodgers slotted it home. What a great start. Rodgers’ time in Serbia was not a flash in the pan. It has been a difficult season for him at Aston Villa, but suddenly the players are wearing the England kit.

England got their second goal 11 minutes later. The corner kick was not cleared, Saka played the ball back into the box, Rodgers flashed the ball in front of goal, Guehi flicked it on and Watkins scored at the back post.
Incredibly, this was Guehi’s second assist. After scoring his first England goal against Serbia, the Crystal Palace captain became a major goal threat. After that, Saka achieved an absolute world record. The Arsenal winger cut in from the right, kicked the ball in with his favored left foot and fired a stunning shot into the top corner.
They could have scored more, but Rodgers hit the chance against the crossbar. England keeper Pickford showed his quality with saves from David Brooks and Chris Mepham. The match fizzled out in the second half as both teams made changes.
However, England could qualify for Tuesday’s World Cup if they beat Latvia on Tuesday night and Serbia beat Albania. Better prepare a wall map of the World Cup. Expectations and excitement are already high.
