Steven Gerrard’s view on Rangers’ title chances warned by Celtic and Hearts | Soccer | Sports

It may seem like a lofty ambition in his first year back, but Lafferty believes Gerrard’s mindset means that if he takes the job, his only aim will be to aim for Scottish Premiership glory right away.

“If Steven comes in, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him really starting the team,” Lafferty told Record Sport.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes them try again and compete for the title this season. Seriously, I wouldn’t be shocked if he wins. He’ll come in expecting to win.”

“He’s not going to settle for second place. He’s not going to think, ‘Let’s close the gap to Celtic and Hearts and maybe finish by a few points.’

“I know him and I’ve played for him. He could literally come in and think he can win the league this season. That’s the type of guy he is.”

“He’s full of confidence and belief in his abilities and that’s what the fans want. No manager will say they can’t win a title, but making that change now would be a huge improvement for everyone at Rangers on and off the pitch.”

“Especially knowing he’s here to win the title in his first season, not to get closer to Celtic or Hearts, but to win. “With Stephen coming in, we’ll also be playing in a big League Cup semi-final, so we’ll have the chance to win the trophy early.”

“Celtic were much better in the past than they are now. They are not at their best at the moment and the problem lies with Brendan Rodgers and the board.

“They are having a tough time but unfortunately Rangers are in the spotlight because of the result and everything that happened with Russell.

“I really hope that Stephen and I can finish it in the next few days and we can all be excited about it.”

Lafferty believes that during Gerrard’s first spell in charge, the club regained standards to a level not seen since the days of Walter Smith.

“Bar Fergie (Barry Ferguson) last season, I feel like Steven was the only Rangers manager who could get results against Celtic since Walter was there,” Lafferty added.

“That was a long time ago. Not many managers go to Parkhead and beat them in their own backyard, but he did it. So it would be a great appointment for the club. He scores 55 points and doesn’t take anything the players say.”

“If you’re not playing to your strengths, you’re going to be left out of the team. He’s not afraid to make big decisions and if he comes in, it’s going to be a fresh start for everyone. Some guys will get a second chance.”

“When you get a new manager, there’s always going to be talk. From what I’ve heard, he wants to come back and the club wants to keep him here.

“I’m sure the fans will be backing us right away. If he plays against Dundee United, a win could really get Rangers’ season off to a serious start.”

“Ibrox will literally be bouncing. You’re going to see players who haven’t done well over the last few months really come into their own just because they’re playing under Steven Gerrard.”
