Rangers could announce ‘nearly agreed’ contract for Steven Gerrard today | Soccer | Sports

Rangers are reportedly on the verge of hiring Steven Gerrard for a second time as manager. Ibrox bosses are looking for a new manager following Russell Martin’s sacking last Sunday and are thought to have held talks with the Liverpool legend in London this week about a potential return to Ibrox.

President Andrew Cavenagh and his right-hand man Parag Malate are leading the charge, with Greter Steinsson, technical director of football for 49ers Enterprises, said to be playing a role as well. Gerrard could be set to return to Glasgow as early as today, according to new reports. Scotland’s Daily Express reported that the agreement between the two sides was “nearly agreed” and would see the 45-year-old return to the Ibrox dugout almost four years after his initial departure.

Gerrard first took charge of Rangers in the summer of 2018 and went on to an unbeaten run in 2020/21, leading the club to their first Premiership title in 10 years.

However, the England icon moved to Aston Villa the following November, where he spent just under a year before being shown the door.

Gerrard left for the Middle East in July 2023 after being appointed as Al Etifaq’s new head coach, but the club decided to end his tenure in January this year, facing another difficult period.

Earlier this week, the Anfield legend admitted he would be keen to return to football management if the right opportunity presented itself.

On Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, he said: “I think certain jobs and certain clubs suit my style and the way I want to do things. But now I have time where I’m not in a hurry and I know the right people who will make me stronger and a better coach. They are the people I need to find.”

“Because I know and have proven that you can be successful as a manager if you have the right match with the people around you, and that’s what I’m working on behind the scenes right now.

“But since I’ve been in Saudi, I’ve had five or six very interesting phone calls. And I wasn’t ready because I didn’t have the team around me. And the timing wasn’t right. My daughter had just had a baby and I had just become a grandpa. I just wasn’t ready.”

“I don’t have the staff ready. So, unfortunately, their opportunity, their call, if you will, came at the wrong time. But if the right call comes to me, the right club, the right challenge, and I have the personnel, it will happen one day. I will take up that challenge, because it’s in me. It’s in me.”
