Martin Tyler was the voice of the Premier League at Sky Sports for more than 30 years, but will leave the broadcaster in 2023 when his contract expires.
Martin Tyler sheds light on his departure from Sky Sports. The 80-year-old will retire from the company in 2023 after more than 30 years of service.
Tyler’s voice will forever be associated with some of the Premier League’s greatest moments, and he is remembered for shouting out Sergio Aguero’s last name as Manchester City won the league in 2012.
But public opinion changed two years ago when it was announced that Sky would not be renewing Tyler’s contract with the broadcaster after 33 years. He has now opened up about his exit and the problems he was having at the same time, which complicated things.
“So my contract with Sky expired and they decided not to renew it, which is their right,” Tyler told Sky Bet’s In the Mixer.
“I spent 30-odd years there and it was really great and I never meant to say anything bad about them. But there were rumors that I might be retiring and that just wasn’t true.

“It was complicated because around that time I was having voice problems for the first time in my life. I knew it wasn’t going to go well, and then all of a sudden this happened. Nobody knows medically what it is, but it was weird because I could scream but I couldn’t talk.
“I didn’t go to coffee shops, I didn’t answer the phone unless I knew it, so I needed medical expertise at a time when my job at Sky was kind of over.

“I was a little worried at the time because I had a few surgeries on my vocal cords. It took about eight weeks to be active again. It wasn’t a very good eight weeks.”
Tyler continues to commentate for Premier League Productions and hosts his own podcast with over 80 episodes. He went on to speak candidly about what has changed within baseball since leaving the Sky.
“A lot has changed,” Tyler added. “A long time ago, before my first match, John Motson was a commentator on the BBC’s Match of the Day and I knew him well.
“I was working around TV, not as a commentator, and he found out I was attending my first match. He sent me a message saying, ‘Speak a little, but talk a lot.’ I thought that was great advice, and definitely back in that era in the ’70s.
“But now with two voices, sometimes three voices, and someone else on the touchline, the TV commentary has a lot more radio feel to it. Maybe it used to be a little more laid back.
“Then you have something for a very important moment. And in that moment, I mean… people ask me to do Aguero. In fairness, it was impossible for me to do it again. I mean, everything has changed a lot, opinions, social media has obviously changed a lot.”
