Steven Gerrard wants to bring former England coach to Rangers staff as negotiations continue | Soccer | Sports

Steven Gerrard is targeting former England coach Steve Holland for a role in Rangers’ backroom team if he secures the managerial job. Gerrard is currently in London discussing the possibility of a sensational return to Glasgow with Ibrox bosses Andrew Cavenagh, Parag Malate and Greter Steinsson.

The 45-year-old Liverpool legend has been tipped as the frontrunner in the Rangers hierarchy to replace the recently sacked Russell Martin. Those negotiations are expected to continue over the next 24 hours as Gerrard considers a second term as manager. If an agreement is reached, the Daily Record can reveal that Gerrard will target Holland for a coaching role at Ibrox. The 55-year-old was Gareth Southgate’s deputy at the Three Lions for eight years, helping the club reach two European Championship finals.

Holland, who previously worked for Chelsea, has been unemployed since April this year after being sacked by Japanese club Yokohama Marinos. However, if Gerrard returns to Rangers, Holland could join him at Ibrox.

Gerrard revealed on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast earlier this week that he wants a fresh team around him if he returns to management. He said: “I don’t have a (coaching) team around me so I’m not ready.

“And the timing wasn’t right. But if the right call comes to me, the right club, the right challenge, and I have the talent to get it one day, I’ll take that challenge because it’s in me.”

“When I teed it up for Rangers (with Gary McAllister, Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw), I felt like I could do that. I’d love to try again someday. I’d like to change some things, improve some things and come back fresh with different people around me.”

“I’d like to try a few more things. That’s what I’m working on behind the scenes right now. I have a few different ideas, a few different people around me.”

Another name associated with Rangers is legendary midfielder Stephen Davis. He currently works with Northern Ireland national team manager Michael O’Neill and previously served as interim director at Ibrox.

As it stands, however, Davis has not yet been approached about a role at his old team. Gerrard continues to hold talks with Rangers about the managerial role following review talks in London yesterday.

He has made it clear that he wants to understand how the club’s new American owners operate before deciding to make a comeback.

Gerrard previously spent three-and-a-half years at Govan, winning the club’s 55th title in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa.

There are other managerial candidates within the Rangers hierarchy who could replace the sacked Martin, but Gerrard remains their main target.
