Steven Gerrard is set to meet Rangers bosses to discuss a potential return to the title-winning Scottish champions after Rangers sacked Russell Martin
Steven Gerrard will hold talks over a potential return to Rangers as the Scottish giants look for a replacement for Russell Martin, who they only appointed in the summer.
Rangers are languishing in 8th place with just one win in seven league games, and due to their humiliation in Europe, they recently decided to part ways with their manager. They have now set their sights on Gerrard, the only player to win a league title at Ibrox in the past decade.
Rangers chairman Andrew Kavena and vice-chairman Parag Malate are due to meet the Liverpool icon in London on Thursday. Two senior figures were at the club when Gerrard was last in the post.
Rangers approached Gerrard earlier this year about taking over as Philippe Clement, but it didn’t suit him for family and personal reasons and he turned down the opportunity. But his choice to meet with Rangers executives suggests his circumstances have changed, reports the Daily Mail.
Gerrard recently told the Rio Meets podcast: “Inside myself, I still feel like I have a little bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to take on some exciting challenges. But I want certain kinds of challenges. In an ideal world, if they were available, I would jump at them.”

Gerrard left Rangers eight months after winning the league and joined Aston Villa, but was sacked after less than a year at the Premier League club. His only job since then was an 18-month stint with Saudi Arabia’s Al Etifaq, which ended in January.
The composition of Gerrard’s potential backroom staff could pose some challenges – during his last spell he relied on then first-team coach Michael Beale. He later became Rangers manager, but endured a spell of terror and it remains to be seen how his reward will be received.
It has been revealed that Greter Steinsson, technical director of 49ers Enterprises, which owns the Rangers, is involved in the search for a new manager. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart are less prominent this time around than they were when Martin was appointed.
I am aware that pursuing the former Southampton manager was a mistake. A statement read: “When we took over the club this summer, we all shared what we wanted to build for Rangers: winning trophies in Scotland and competing at a high level in Europe.
“We know it will take time to achieve these goals, but our performance and results are not good enough. We know you’re frustrated, and so are we. We didn’t get this right, and it’s our responsibility to fix it and get back on track.”
