Wayne Rooney has made a U-turn on Ruben Amorim days after claiming he had no faith in Manchester United manager ahead of 2-0 win at Sunderland
Wayne Rooney has made a complete U-turn on Ruben Amorim just days after declaring he had lost all faith in the Manchester United boss. Rooney was one of the United legends putting pressure on the battled head coach following a disastrous start to the campaign.
There were suggestions that Saturday’s Sunderland clash at Old Trafford could have ended against him, but an impressive 2-0 win appears to have secured his place for a further few weeks.
Speaking on a BBC podcast ahead of the game, Rooney aired his frustration at the club’s stagnation under Amorim, who have not had back-to-back Premier League wins after nearly 12 months at the helm.
The former Derby and Birmingham manager said:
“Ruben Amorim is my age, he’s still a young manager and I’m sure he has a huge future, but what’s happening at Man United, this is not Man United.

“Honestly I hope he can turn it around. But after everything I’ve seen, I honestly don’t have faith in it.”
Taking aim at the team, he continued.
“The soul has left the club. We need a new engine, a new lease of life. We need something to kickstart that football club. What is this going on? This is not all about the manager. The players, they don’t deserve to wear that shirt.
However, following United’s win against Sunderland which brought them within six points of leaders Arsenal, Rooney subsequently praised Amorim for his tactical adjustments during the match against the Black Cats. Speaking at the Legend of Soccer Dinner in London, he told Sky Sports: “Good result for the weekend.
“A high-pressure game for the manager, the players and the club and I thought they played really well (they were efficient).
“I hope Amorim does well and the form turns around. As he said, he is a great young manager but if you don’t get results the pressure will come on you.
“He changed it a little bit over the weekend. There were two before and he got a little more direct. I have to give him credit because he said it didn’t change, but he changed it a little bit and it worked.
Former Everton player Rooney is keen to see Amorim finally secure back-to-back league wins when they face Liverpool on October 19.
