Manchester United signed Senne Lanmans at the weekend along with Peter Schmeichel to make his debut in the summer and revealed what is expected of the club’s goalkeeper
Peter Schmeichel said that the Manchester United goalkeeper’s job was to “save 10 points per season, don’t give them away, don’t give them away.” He gave his verdict on Sen Rammens’ debut at Old Trafford, and the Belgian was acquired by the club in the summer amid a goalkeeping reshuffle.
The Rammen were of unknown quantity, having been signed while Andre Onana and Altai Beindir were at the club. In a surprising turn of events, the Cameroonian, who had two error-strewn years at Manchester, was allowed out on loan.
That left Bayindir, who started the year as No 1, as first choice under Ruben Amorim. He too made notable mistakes with United struggling for results and ultimately made the difference against Sunderland.
Although the Rammens kept a clean sheet, Schmeichel claims that United’s goalkeeper has given up points in recent years. He was told that their core limit was to ensure that they banked more points than they were entitled to due to the goalkeeper’s performance.

“I went back when I played. My coaching was the same with Edwin (van der Sar) and David De Geer. We had to save 10 points a season. We’ve gotten used to it over the past few years. It’s the goalkeeper who wins points and loses them first.
“That’s what you see, you see this young lad, he didn’t have much to do for a long time, he literally only had the ball at his feet, and he did very well.
“You would expect from a young goalkeeper these days that’s the way he was brought up, so there were times when he was similar to Edwin, the long ball, he saved first to the left.
At his peak, De Guia was a highly influential goalkeeper for Manchester’s red side. He picked up many personal accolades and was courted by the likes of Real Madrid. Gary Neville, a former player for many clubs, aired concerns about the lack of quality goalkeepers before the season started.
