Darren Fletcher has been playing a different role for the fifth time since returning to Manchester United, and the former midfielder is now heading the club’s Under-18 team.
Manchester United’s academy team has become the latest to bear the brunt of cost-cutting measures, but it still hasn’t stopped Darren Fletcher from atoneing for his crimes. Fletcher, who is currently in charge of the U-18 team, has overseen five of the six league games, and has also overseen the Cup victory over Brighton and Middlesbrough.
The same was true for teams under the age of 21, and they did even better. Travis Bignon is the dugout guy there, with six wins from six games and the United young players heading the Premier League 2.
All of this is in the less ideal background. According to a report by the Athletic, the renovated United Carrington training base does not have enough space to accommodate the academy team, and as manager Jim Ratcliffe continues to replace it, they are unable to enjoy some of the benefits they had enjoyed before the redevelopment.
The young people are currently housed in temporary accommodation, and there are no more dedicated first-floor changing rooms or treatment rooms near the top team. Previously they shared some areas with first-team players, but now their interactions are limited, but United said they are waiting for the arrival of new academy director Stephen Torpy before work begins on the custom academy structure.
The report shows that there are currently changing rooms dedicated to “up-and-coming talent” in preparation for academy stars to practice in the first team. Fletcher’s son Tyler is one of the players who have recently benefited, along with Cia Lacey, one of the young players who played in United’s postseason friendly in May.

Darren Fletcher experienced a lot while at United, and was promoted to a player and returned to the staff after retiring. However, since returning to the club he spent as a boy, the Scots have played many roles.
He returned to the club in 2020 as manager of the U-16 team, and later served as the top team coach and technical director. In April 2024, his role changed to technical coaching, overcame a rethinking of coaching for manager Eric Ten Haag’s final summer and manager Reuben Amorim’s early months before moving to his current post in July.
Carrington’s situation may seem like a simple excuse to undermine results on the field. But that wasn’t the case, as Fletcher’s charges brought many overwhelming victory.
“I’m really excited to see more responsibility for taking on this new role and developing our younger players directly,” Fletcher, 41, said over the summer. “We look forward to working with people of this talented age group, supporting them to reach their full potential and preparing them to enjoy their careers at the highest possible level.”
“I’m pleased that Darren will be leading the U-18 group,” added Jason Wilcox, director of football. “He knows exactly what it takes to be successful as an academy alumni and has played an important role in shaping the paths of many young players in recent years.
“The excellent relationship with all of Darren’s staff will further strengthen our strong connections between the academy and the first team, and further enhance our ability to produce world-class players who can play for Manchester United.”
Meanwhile, Fletcher has two sons at the academy, not one. Twin brothers Tyler and Jack have gone on to different careers, with the former captaining Scotland by age group and the latter being the first captains of England’s Under-18 team in March.
The brothers continue to impress United’s academy team this season, with Jack approaching his top debut last season. He was benched several times under Amorim, including a knockout victory against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.
The 2025/26 season has been a promising season so far, despite the fact that things are far from perfect. And it has a pretty Fletcher flavour.
