Things look a little different when England and Wales head towards the pitch on Thursday evening to reach the pitch for the pair’s international friendliness. The two homelands are set to face each other in Wembley Stadium, and what was their first meeting since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar?
Both England and Wales are taking a break from qualifying for both teams as they are suitable to book their spots in the competition in North America next summer. It’s all turning to Wembley for Friendship on Thursday before they resume their eligibility campaign.
However, given that the mascots are people who live with dementia prior to the match, the usual pre-match ceremony has an unusual touch to it. This will be offered as part of the joint initiative of the two Football Associations. The 22 selected supporters have the opportunity to go out with the best players in the world.
The initiative doesn’t stop there. Like in the second half, players will appear in the back wearing a nameless shirt. This is a bid to highlight the struggle that is considered to be the most common symptom of dementia faces, especially syndromes.
A statement from the UK stated, “The historic moment will be provided by the Alzheimer’s Disease Association and the FA, the fourth of its kind since the philanthropic partnership was established in 2021.
“Soccer fans have been nominated from across England and Wales to represent the various faces of UK dementia, and they deliver a powerful message to come out with their team and take them to a unified team to beat the UK’s biggest killer. They are seeking donations, campaigns or support to themselves and to their loved ones affected by their condition.”
Fan Paul of England, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2019, will be among those joining Wembley players. He states:
“I cherish this opportunity. It’s incredibly special to see the family there and share the moment with them. I also hope that dementia isn’t necessarily what you expect and being diagnosed doesn’t mean you suddenly stop loving.”
