Former captain Steve Gerrard hasn’t pulled a punch as he has given the reasons for England’s failure under Sven Golan Erickson and Fabio Capello.
Stephen Gerrard claims England was a loser on the international stage due to the ego and bitterness that existed between the Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea stars.
England’s so-called “Golden Generation” continues to be one of the biggest achievement teams ever.
Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Shoals, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Ashley Cole were unable to help the three Lions reach the semi-finals of major tournaments.
And Gerrard speaks as a guest on the “Rio Ferdinand Presents” podcast, thinking that the group is too mature and too thought to get along with it. Gerrard said: “I think we were all selfish losers.
“I’m watching Terry now, and I see (Jamie) Karager sitting next to Paul Shoals in this fan discussion. They seem to have been their best mates in 20 years.

“And I’m looking at Karager and Gary Neville’s relationship, and it looks like they’ve been friends for 20 years. I’m probably more friendly with you than I did when I played with you for 15 years.
“So why didn’t we connect when we were 20, 21, 22, 23? Was it ego? Was it a rivalry?
“Why didn’t we connect as teammates in England at the time? And I think it was in the culture within the UK that we weren’t connected.
“Too many in our room. We were friendly and not connected. We weren’t a team. We didn’t become really good, strong teams at any stage.”
Despite winning a hat of 114 and captaining his country, Gerrard says he sometimes gave a slight spy to be in England.
He added:
“I’m going to do seven hours in this room? There was no social media, no DVD players or anything.
“Whatever channels 1 to 5 or whatever it was. I used to be declining. I used to love the game. I loved playing in England. I was really proud. I enjoyed the training sessions, but it was 90 minutes a day.
“And I was thinking, I was in this room from now on until I had 30 minutes of dinner in this room and then the next day. It seemed like I didn’t feel a part of the team. I didn’t feel connected to my teammates with England. I just wanted a game and a training session.”
