Legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel swiped for Andre Onana and Altai Bayindeal while ratings for Senne Ranmen’s debut. After an impressive first outing, the iconic former keeper quickly managed the expectations surrounding Lammen. The summer recruit made their United debut on Saturday afternoon, keeping their clean sheets in a 2-0 victory over the newly promoted Sunderland.
Manager Reuben Amorim made a bold decision, benching the buy-indeals and giving Belgian Lammens the first chance to shine ahead of the international break. His introduction has come at a challenging time for United goalkeepers, with both Bay Indeal and Onana making some well-known blunt instruments. Onana recently made a temporary switch to Turkish Super Rig Trabzonspor, allowing the 23-year-old to move up the ranks at Old Trafford and challenge the Turkish Keeper to a spot in the starting lineup.
Schmeichel did not shy away from pointing out the past mistakes of the goalkeeper that plagued United. While early signs for Runmen are promising, the shotstopper, who has won multiple Premier League titles, stressed that he doesn’t want to put too much pressure on him, saying that testing of true quality is a way to respond to future mistakes.
“Think about the goalkeepers we’ve had over the past few years and the number of goals we’ve admitted from errors. We’ve already had nine errors this season.
“It came back when I played. My coaching was the same as Edwin (Vander Sal) and David DeGear. I had to save 10 points in the season. I’ve been used to it over the past few years. The goalkeeper scores points and loses first.
“That’s what you see, you see this young young man, he didn’t have much to do for a long time, he literally only had the ball at his feet, and he did very well.
“From a young goalkeeper these days — you’d expect it because it’s the way it grew up — so he looked like Edwin, who saves to the left first.
“I think his confidence has grown, you could see from the first cross, Matigis de Liguto’s response was great. The defenders hope they can get rid of some of that pressure under the coche.”
Schmeichel continued. “It didn’t happen with Man Utd for a moment. Of course, the defenders were happy about it. It was premature to talk about it.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen it over the years, and great players appear on humans, the pressure is unforgiving, and then they can’t deal with it.
“He’s done well, he now has an international break in the next game where he has to do the same thing, and seeing how he develops, all the goalkeepers make mistakes.
