The Rangers confirmed on Sunday evening that Martin had been released from his duties and added:
“Russell and his staff have worked very hard throughout their time at the club. We appreciate their efforts and hope for them well for the future. Further updates from the club will continue in time.”
Searches for alternatives have already begun, and bookmakers list Gerard in their role favorites. If he is appointed, it will mark a return to the club where he was first given his chance as senior manager.
Gerrard took over control with the Rangers in 2018, following the spell overseeing the youth side of Liverpool. During his three years of spells, the club secured the Scottish Premiership Crown in the 2020/21 campaign.
He then joined Aston Villa in November 2021, but was fired within 12 months, making his spell proven to be short.
Gerrard’s latest manager was Al Ettifak, the Saudi league side, who left in January.
According to the Guardian, Ibrox powers view Gerrard as a “serious candidate” for the current empty hot seat. Nevertheless, he is understood to be against Danny Roll and Sean Dish.
Other reports show that the Rangers had discussions with Gerrard over the summer, but their appointments were not made possible before they finally went with Martin.
In the meantime, former Ranger Chairman Dave King was revived at Ibrox, throwing his weight behind Gerrard.
Speaking to STV, he said:
“We’ve seen teams that don’t seem to have any plans for what to do when they own and when they don’t. Stephen will quickly sort it out.”
