So here’s the quiz question… which team was the last team that won the Premier League title during the transition?
It’s probably controversial, but in 1996 Manchester United – you can’t win anything with your kids – maybe the only answer. After shipping Andrei Kanchersky, Paul Ince and Mark Hughes, they brought in academy alumni David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and others.
It was one hell of the shift when Sir Alex Ferguson went from older, experienced and proven players to winning and winning kids.
Liverpool is slightly different in that they are already champions – and they are about to move to a new team while they are on top. However, shifting from the team that won the title last season to a completely different look is not yet Arne Slot’s gamble.
Two new fullbacks, new forwards, and even new playmakers. They also spent £400 million building that new team. Let’s make it clear here…it was also a traumatic summer when players suffered a collective tragedy over losing Diogo Jota, who was so loved by everyone. Anyone in any dressing room will feel that kind of blow. The club handled it as much as possible, but it was another challenge for the slots and the dressing room as a whole.
What’s noteworthy is how Liverpool entered this season. Jeremie Frimpong has arrived and Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz all started the season. Hugo Ekitike was also new in the attack, with Alexander Isaac later joining. It’s one hell of dynamics and changes in playing style.
Suddenly, Ryan Gravenburch’s midfield last season with Alexis Mac Alistair and Dominique Soboschlei was torn apart to accommodate Wurtz, a beautiful, creative and artistic player. However, it’s very different from what he’s done before, ideally Liverpool will have to do another setup to accommodate him as the NO10.
Starting like they do – five straight wins in the Premier League, a good victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, a homage to the man-management of the slots, and an incredible team spirit that we saw them score a late goal.
Now we are probably looking at a more realistic outlook. Teams need time to gel. They were my choice to become champions – and I still think they are my favorites.
However, they lost at Crystal Palace and now Chelsea shows that their team needs work. It must gel. Conate is struggling. The slot on the right looks problematic. Where do you play Wirtz? Isak looks undercooked.
Ideal for any team is to strengthen when you’re on top. However, Liverpool did not actually have that luxury. They had to buy two new fullbacks. The midfield had to be strengthened anyway, and the forward line had to be strengthened. They lost players. So instead of trying to strengthen Liverpool, they had to rebuild it. It was a big gamble for slots, but he actually had no choice.
It was clear that Jurgen Klopp’s older team needed major surgery. The slots have been postponed for a year – and now we have to do that. It’s only time to see if they can come through the ultimate test. Slot was incredible in his first year, but now it’s a much bigger test and really shows his caliber as a manager.
