Jamie Carrager claims that Liverpool should have beaten Chelsea, who was given their absence at Stamford Bridge on Saturday – they’ve never lost to them. The Reds have been struggling with back-to-back Premier League defeats, and have now entered an international break from the top of the table. The surviving champions looked defensively vulnerable, even in their seven-game winning run to begin the season.
Arne Slot’s side wasted a two-goal lead against both Bournemouth and Newcastle in the opening fixture after winning the victory on a delayed strike in each match. The Reds scored the largest points from the equipment in the opening five leagues, but recognized the winner of the suspension time at Crystal Palace before suffering the same fate against Chelsea. Slot men caught between these league losses were beaten by Galatasaray in the Champions League and exhibited similar defensive vulnerability.
Carragher criticized the club for playing basketball rather than football during that trip to Turkey, reiterating these concerns after a weekend defeat at Stamford Bridge.
“My criticism that Liverpool is like a basketball team has come back to bother them again,” Karager said during the extra time on Super Sunday.
“This thing about ending with a football match should dominate a game like this as Chelsea changes the personnel they have.”
Carragher criticized Liverpool for being “too easy to play.”
He argued that the issue prevented them from using Cody Gakupo’s equalizer against Chelsea.
Earlier this week in Istanbul, Victor Osimhen’s penalty proved to be his only goal for the match, but Galatasaray had many other scoring opportunities. Cragher expressed similar concerns while covering the CBS game.
“I expressed those (concerns) to my manager early on, and he’s probably going to know that it’s much better than me,” the critic said. “He is clearly a great manager.
“But now Liverpool is from, and I called them the first team from last season, the Workman-like team, sprinkled a bit of star dust in terms of the transfers they brought in.
Despite Liverpool losing three consecutive matches in all competitions, the manager slot chose to focus positively.
“After we scored 1-1, it went our way and I think I was waiting for a second goal. The decision could be better and the final 10-15 minutes were end-to-end,” he told the match that day.
“We arrived at an 18-yard box with (Andy) Robertson. We couldn’t control the ball, but it’s a subtle margin like as long as I’m here. Last week, like the two tough games this week, the subtle margins aren’t what we like.
“In both games, we created more opportunities than the teams we faced — Palace and Chelsea — but the truth is that we only scored once in both games, and our opponents scored twice.”
