Jamie Carrager doubles criticism of Liverpool’s “basketball team” after Chelsea’s defeat

Liverpool lost three straight games in all competitions, but former player Jamie Carrager noticed that the cracks were beginning to appear long before his weekend defeat at Chelsea

With the second consecutive Premier League defeat, Liverpool fell off the top of the table as they headed for an international break, with former Reds star Jamie Carrager watching the same issue for a while. The real-life league champions looked porous behind, even when they picked up points, but now they look to catch up with them.

Liverpool dumped a two-goal lead against both Bournemouth and Newcastle on their first two outings. Arne Slot led his team to maximum points from the first five games, but he recognized the final Gasp winner at Crystal Palace and did the same against Chelsea on Saturday.

During these two league matches, the slot red lost to Galatasaray in the Champions League, showing some of the same leaks. Carragher denounced the club playing basketball rather than football on a trip to Türkiye, repeating the same claims on the weekend’s reverse.

“My criticism that Liverpool is like a basketball team has come back to bother them again,” Karager said during the extra time on Super Sunday. “This thing about ending with a football match should dominate a game like this as Chelsea changes the personnel they have.”

Carragher said Liverpool was “too easy to play,” suggesting that it was true even when they won the game. To Chelsea, he claimed that they were no longer able to complete the turnaround based on Cody Gakupo’s equalizer.

In Istanbul mid-week, the Victor Osimhen penalty became the only goal of the game, but Galatasaray had many other opportunities to score. During his work at CBS covering the game, Carragher expressed a similar complaint.

“I expressed it early on to my manager, he’s probably going to know that it’s much better than me,” the critic said. “He’s clearly a great manager, but last season, Liverpool called them the first team, the team like Workman, sprinkled a bit of star dust on the conditions of the transfer they brought in.

Liverpool’s boss slot was aiming to take something positive despite the team losing 3 in spins in all competitions. “After we scored 1-1, it went our way and I think I was waiting for a second goal. The decision could be better and the final 10-15 minutes were end-to-end,” he told the match that day.

“We arrived at an 18-yard box with (Andy) Robertson. We couldn’t control the ball, but it’s a subtle margin like as long as I’m here. Last week, like the two tough games this week, the subtle margins aren’t what we like.

“In both games, we created more opportunities than the teams we faced — Palace and Chelsea — but the truth is that we only scored once in both games, and our opponents scored twice.”
